Introducing a new pig

Post by Deanb123 » Sat Mar 20, 2021 9:03 pm

Hello! I was hoping for some advice about introducing a new pig. I rescued a male pig a few years ago, he has plenty of space. He spends all day sleeping in his shed and only comes out when we take him for a walk. He's very loving and very happy when out walking (tail wagging, running and barking, belly scratches) but it seems to me he is leading an unhappy life and shouldn't be sleeping all day and only happy when we take him out.

Therefore I want to introduce a second pig. My pig has been spayed. Is it a bad idea to choose a second male pig if they've been spayed? Or should a second female be best? I will be rescuing again so want to be as flexible as possible.

I've read up on the fighting and gradual introduction as well.

Has anyone tried reintroducing in this way before and have any tips?

Thank you for your help

Your existing pig is probably just a little lonely, so bravo on going looking for another. He should be able to exist with another castrated boar just fine, or at last if he doesn't it's not because you've 2 castrates - in general they make great buddies. A female in the mix would be totally fine too.

Good luck.
