in my exp it generally follows that a sow who has large litters generally has large litters and a sow who has small litters generally has small litters - they don't usually go up and down.
also , a sow from a large litter will usually produce large litters and vice versa,

But of course there is always an exception to the rule!! Minnie had 14 last year (only managed to raise 9 - squashed the rest!) and this year had 4!! I think she deserved the rest though.

Based on two litters each for our girls, we have decided that the Boar has a large input into the litter size. First litters for the girls from the same hired in boar were 3 and 4 piglets each. Second litters, from a different boar, but used for both of them were 11 and 12 each. Speaking to the owner of Boar 1, she said oh yes he always has smaller litters. The second one was a first timer, but his dad had always produced large litters. Maybe co-incidence but who knows? Possibly some sort of research program if anyone is really interested?
