Turning the ground

Post by robnock » Mon Sep 11, 2017 12:47 pm

Just added a sow in pig to our little herd though she is in quarantine at the moment and turning the ground quite a lot, though there is lots of grass and other plants to eat Previous owner said she did not turn the ground for them and so wondering:

1 Any suggestions as to how to stop/reduce the turning.
2 When she is put in with the others (2 younger KK piglets) is there a likelihood of her teaching them to turn the ground?

Any advice appreciated,

Make sure she has enough food. Not so much she gets fat, but she might be hungry. So hay, carrots, veg etc are good to nibble on.
If you can roll the ground she is on to compact it down that will help, or put her somewhere where the ground is firmer.

It definitely is a habit and can be learnt. Equally a tap on the snout when she starts routing could help.
