Are they ready

Post by At the edge » Sat Apr 01, 2017 10:58 am

I have a few kunekune castrates that are approx 9 months old weighing in around 50-53kg, can anyone tell me if they are heavy enough to go yet please?

Hi there,

With kunekune it is very difficult to gauge a weight for slaughter as they can vary so much in type, size and body fat. Have you a condition score for them - in other words are that not overly fat!!

I used to take my Berkshires at about 45kg to 55kg so they would fit into that range if not too fat. That gives you small joints etc.

I usually leave my kunekune until around 12 months plus unless taking for sausages and then you can take them when you are all ready.

Experience will help you make the decision the next time around so you could take them when you feel ready to. Sorry I can't be more precise!
Cheerio for now, Sam Jones :-)
