lead training

Hi I have recently become the proud owner of 3 lovely gilt weaners and wondered if anyone had taught their pigs to walk on a lead? It would be an ideal solution when moving them around the farm and also fun to take them out for a ramble with the dogs!

you can get harnesses for them but you need to start them young.

if you go rambling off your own holding you have to get a 'walking' licence

I sold a piglet last year to a lady in Cheltenham who has a walking licence. I know she struggled to start with - a bit like training a puppy to walk on a lead. However, Wilbur now walks the children to school each day. I can put you in touch if you think it would be useful.

I tried by using small, then medium then large dog harnesses. I was new to pigs, any livestock really, so probably not confident enough. It didn't work for me but be confident and I think it will

Hi , I've tried the harness thing and I think it will work but they DON'T like it much. I can follow them but they don't like being pulled. Trouble is the harness slips over their front legs and I'm terrified they escape! Looks like I'll have to resort to bribery and corruption :? Peanuts are a favourite, I'll try that

I got my 2 KKs harnesses from http://www.pigs4ever.com/PotBelliedPigP ... arness.htm they are fully ajustable and don't fall off! when i started training them i always had a piece of fruit on hand but once they learnt they don't gain anything from pulling they are as good as a KK pig can be. :wink:

I went for a H style harness they sometimes slip forward but you just need to adjust it.

Thanks Emily,I'll give that a try. They are wonderful characters, so talkative! The horses really hate them but the ponies don't mind them at all1

It's the other way round for us, the horse loves them and the pony isnt so sure. Yes mine are both very chatty especially the girl! She could talk for england she even talks in her sleep, I feel very sorry for her brother.
