kunekune companion wanted for my 5 year old gilt

Post by Battlehayes » Sat Feb 04, 2017 10:15 pm

After the death of my 16 and a half year old kunekune last year her 5 year old companion Betty is now lonely. I am offering a great home for another friendly pure bred kunekune to keep her company.

I am outside of Plymouth Devon

Hello there,

I have a pair of registered castrates looking for a home, free of charge. They each have a little story to tell - they are both very healthy! I could split them as I have other pigs. They are around 4 months old and were partially hand reared as mum had mastitis so VERY tame. There is a film of them here and more photos on my FB page:

I am based in Shropshire which is a long way though but they would travel in a crate.

If you would like any more info come back to me.

Are castrates best suited as company to a gilt? When I first got Betty there was some settling down and fighting, even after initial time apart ! I had heArd that 2 females were worse together. I would be interested but Shropshire is too far for me to go. I assume transport would be too expensive - any idea on pig transport ??

Hi there,

You need to go for younger pigs, ideally as young as possible as these won't fight so much when introduced. A castrate a a gilt make a good combination as girls can sometimes be very hormonal! Not all though.

Young pigs could be transported in the back of a car in a dog crate if young enough and small enough.

Some people will transport but will charge at least the cost of petrol/diesel and perhaps for their time.

At the moment I don't think I would have time to travel down to you with these little guys but if you can't find any more locally to you then come back to me :)

Hello there, I am really sorry to say that the same evening that I chatted to you another person was also looking for company for a pig who had lost their companion and they decided to have my two that evening.

However, do you use FB? We have a new page for Sales, Advice and re-homing. This is the link:

https://www.facebook.com/groups/1812369015684879/

If you join here you can advertise for a companion and I think you will find you might get replies from people locally.

Do go for young pigs though as this will make things so much easier.

If you don't use FB I am happy to advertise for you.

Hello
I wonder if you would be interested in giving my recently bereaved kunekune pig (Mash) a new home. She is a 7 year old very tame and friendly sow whose sister (Bangers) unfortunately passed away last week. She is already distressed being alone and has dug up our field as a result. She is very sociable and has mixed well with our three dogs and previously shared a field with 2 rather large horse. She comes when her name is called and sits when asked, for a treat. She loves to have her belly scratched by hand and a back rub with a yard brush. She would make a fantastic addition to your school farm.
We live in Cheshire but would try and arrange transport.
Please contact me if you feel you are able to help on 07747103184

Kindest regards
Dr Laura Oakley.

Hi , thanks for the offer but am going for a young piglet as companion - to avoid any major fighting! Best of luck in finding a home for Mash
