Fighting Piglets

Post by CarolineB » Fri Apr 24, 2009 8:38 pm

We have two piglets that are fighting over the same teat. We can't intervene as they're in an arc in the field and if we try to intervene mum gets upset and stops feeding.

They're both doing okay - not the biggest or fattest, but okay - we think this is because they're sharing a front teat and both are quite feisty as to who gets to feed.

But they're getting quite beaten up - one's had a punctured cheek (the vet said it's quite common in pigs) and the other now looks like Rocky at the end of a film with beaten up eyes! They're utter thugs!

Is this normal?

We're going to introduce food at 3 weeks but just wanted to check if there was anything else we should be doing.

Yes, it is normal, its the old pecking order thing.
at least they're on a front teat!
there's really not much you can do but healthy piglets will follow mum around and suckle while shes grazing so there will be times when both piglets will be getting fed without a fight.
just keep an eye on the wounds

kunekune piglets don't need to be creep fed, by two or three weeks of age they should be taking a certain amout of mums food. by three weeks of age mum should be on 3lbs of food for herself and half a pound for each piglet she is feeding so there will be plenty there for them.
don't make the mistake of feeding them high protien pig weaner nuts - kunekune piglets will thrive without them and high protein is not good for them unless you're looking to have them in the freezer by 6 months old!!
