2 years old, not breeding

Post by horaceklee » Mon Dec 25, 2017 10:51 pm

I raised a boar and sow together. they are now both over 2 years old. they have not produced a litter yet.

I added a sow of a different breed this past summer...she'll be a year old soon. she is not pregnant yet either.

Lastly, I added a castrated boar just within the past few months.

Is there something I should be doing to get these pigs to breed?

It does sound like your boar might not be up to the job.

The best thing I could suggest is to separate him from the girls for a few weeks. Then put them in an adjoining area to see if he (or the girls) show any interest when they come into heat. If there is renewed interest then immediately put them together and see if they mate.

There are drugs you can get to make the gilts ovulate, but if the problem is with the boar it obviously wouldn't help.
