Pre Breeding Injection

Post by rachlawson27 » Sun Jan 29, 2017 7:37 pm

Hi,

My sow is due to farrow in a months time. I have read that some people choose to inject their sow prior to farrowing to pass on immunity to their piglets and to help with the sows overall health , injections such as ivomectin, dectomax etc? Would anyone recommend doing this or not? Should I just worm her and leave her to it?

Thank you in advance. :D

Ideally you should worm the sow about 3 weeks before farrowing. This will help the sow make the most of her food - as the piglets double in size during this period. But it will also help to minimise the uptake of worms after they are born and give them a good start in life.

How much difference it makes depends on the current worm burden of the sow. But its a good idea.

Hi,

Thank you for this, do you recommend a particular wormer, just out of curiosity?

Thank you.

Ivermectin seems quite popular
