Is there an alternative to pig nuts?

Post by Carol » Fri Aug 26, 2011 1:02 pm

About 6 months ago Trading Standards took a sample of my pig nuts for testing. The results showed that the copper content was 45mg instead of 17mg - that is more than 2 1/2 times more than it should be. The reason I am worried is that I graze the pasture with sheep, after I move the pigs off, and they are intollerant to large amounts of copper. Until this test was done I wasn"t too worried but now I don"t trust how much copper there is in pig nuts.

I wondered if I could substitute some of the pig nuts for something else without it having a detrimental effect on the health of my pigs. If I can reduce the amount of pig nuts I am feeding it will reduce the amount of copper going into the pasture.

I would be interested to know if anyone has any suggestions.
