I was just wondering if anyone knows whether KKs need salt licks or wether they can get the right amount from the ground.
Thanks

Salt is poisonous for pigs so i imagine they would only need very small quantities which they would get in their natural diet from the ground,

My understanding was not that salt itself is poisonous but rather the absence of sufficient water when salt is available.

https://www.nadis.org.uk/disease-a-z/pi ... privation/

which says, inter alia, "If the pig becomes dehydrated, the salt content of the brain becomes concentrated. The same can happen if excessive salt intake occurs without sufficient water intake. Whilst this in itself can provoke clinical disease, greater problems occur when the pig is re-hydrated."

However I wonder if KKs get enough salt and/or minerals from just eating grass and whether they are rooting to try to get extra minerals. Anybody provide their KKs with a mineral lick?

Any thoughts about https://www.pig333.com/shop/manipulable ... -pigs_287/ or https://championschoicesalt.com/animal/pig/

Both are available as blocks so must be fed ad lib rather than mixed in with any feed.

I use the horslyx smallholder block: https://www.littlefieldsfarm.com/horsly ... WIQAvD_BwE
It says on the packaging that it’s suitable for pigs and keeps them occupied in the paddock. Haven’t yet noticed a reduction in rooting but at least they’re busy for a while licking this! It smells very treacly so don’t think it’s too good for their teeth though!
