Food/minerals in Winter

I've recently noticed my horses becoming hungrier as the grass loses its summer richness. For them its easy I just start supplementing them with some hard feed and chaff and soon will put hay out in the field for them.
What do I need to do for my kunekune's? I would be interested to know what everyone else feeds them in the colder months.
Also, it has been mentioned in previous threads that Kune's root to get minerals and iron from the soil. Would they then appreciate a mineral lick similar to those given to sheep and horses?
Any thoughts and advice greatly appreciated,
Thanks, Cath.
