Damsons in the Pigs' Orchard

Post by biddydog » Mon Sep 01, 2014 4:47 pm

This year is a great year for damsons. The problem is there are three damson trees in the pigs' orchard (two two-year old KKs). Should I celebrate and let them enjoy or worry about the stones and an excess of fruit.??? :(

I currently have 9 pigs in an acre orchard which has lots of apples, pears, damsons and developing sloes. I have been shaking the trees as best I can to get some to drop early; in fact my husband has made me a long rod so i can reach branches to shake them  I am doing this to try and spread the drop of fruit a little. I usually move them out when too much is dropping and then collect in buckets and give them amounts I can control. I'm not too sure how much is too much but I think you will instinctively know when enough is enough!!
Cheerio for now, Sam Jones :-)
