I have alot of potatoes to cook for my pigs which couldn't be sold, however my pigs got out and helped themselves to them. What are the reasons for cooking potatoes before giving them to pigs? Do uncooked potatoes harm them?

The books tell you to cook them but mine have, on several occasions, dug mountains of them out of my veggie patch when they have managed to sneak through the electric fence deterrent!!! None of them have been ill, other than lying around with a huge belly and not wanting to get up unless it's something really good on offer

So long as they were not green I would not worry. That's not to say that I would disregard the advice to cook if giving them in regular larger quantities but I can't help thinking that in nature they would take a few and would be fine. Mine certainly will not even try any of the foods considered poisonous or a potential threat to their good health so I like to think they are sensible about what they eat although perhaps not the quantity!!!
Cheerio for now, Sam Jones :-)
