Sibling loss

Post by jennya » Thu Feb 15, 2018 5:13 pm

Hi everyone,

Earlier this week the sister of my 7yr old sibling pair passed away very quickly and without any warning. Her brother was with her when she went and we left them together afterwards for a few hours so he could be with her. I have spoken to the vet about grieving and loss in pigs so I know what to look for but so far he seems fine. He is his normal self and seems quite happy. He does call for her to chat but I think he just needs to get used to not hearing her reply :(

It is to early to know if I should get another pig as company for him or even if he wants this. I'm also aware it can be difficult to introduce a new pig into his existing space. I do spend as much time as possible with him and ensure he has mental stimulation but I dont want to be out there more than he needs as he needs his own space and time alone to process what has happened and get used to the new situation. He is on our land and can hear us when we go outside but cannot see us unless he comes out the house.

I was wondering if there was something else I could do or if anyone had any advice on how to keep him company/mentally stimulated until the next few weeks are over and a decision is made? I was thinking of getting him a radio so he could hear chatting and music and leaving that on a few hours a day when I'm not out there?

Any ideas or advice would be very welcome.
