Pig producing too much saliva

Post by Claire Shuter » Mon May 30, 2016 7:01 pm

One of our kunekunes has started producing far too much saliva when he eats his pig nuts. He still has an appetite loves apples and still digs around for other food. His sister often finishes his food up for him as he's slower. The vet can't see anything obviously wrong with him. Does anyone have any ideas what could be wrong?

My first thought is something dental - a bad or loose tooth, sore or ulcer, damaged gum, something stuck etc. It would be very difficult to check the whole mouth without anaesthetising the pig.
Less commonly there can be issues with the salivation system itself - nerve damage, swellings containing saliva (mucocoeles), lesions of the salivary glands.

You could try the old faithful combo of antibiotics and pain relief, to treat suspected dental disease, and monitor the response.

Thanks. Yes I'm surprised the vet didn't think dental. I will ask them if we can try a course of antibiotics as it's not clearing up on its own.
