Epileptic male

Post by Genderbug » Thu Jun 05, 2014 7:06 pm

Good Evening
I think my aged male has epilepsy. He has a fit then stands and continues as if nothing has happened. They last less than a minute.

Has anyone had experience of this?

Thanks

Hello!

I'm afraid I've not had any experience of fits in pigs but a quick 'Google' shows it may be a problem in pot-bellied pigs. I'll try and extrapolate from other species!

How old is he? When did the fits start? What happens when he has a fit? Can you identify any triggers (eg. smells, foods, experiences, toxins)? How many fits has he had and how far apart are they? How long does it take him to recover afterwards? Try to video the 'fits' and feel free to post on here, or show your own vet as this can help to diagnose causes.

The standard work up would include bloods + urine tests to identify any metabolic reasons for the fits. If nothing is found, and the fits are happening often enough to make it worthwhile, anti-epileptic medication may be trialled. Or you could send him for an MRI scan!
