Mangalitza as companion for my kunekune

Hi,

I am looking for a companion for my year old kunekune girl. I live in the Orkney isles so not so easy to get another kunekune without alot of travelling.

Some close buy is selling mangalitzas. Has anyone ever owned this breed?

How do they compare to kunekunes in size, temperament?

Any ideas if they root? My girl has a nice big field which she just grazes, rarely roots.

mangalitzas can root to olympic standard

they are pretty large - i'm not good at wights but i would reckon certainly twice as big as a kune.
the good compatability factor is that like kunes they don't need a lot of supplementary feeding so you would probably not need to seperate them to feed them

The rooting puts me off a bit but saying that some kunekunes can root. Maybe be worth it so she has a friend again.

She's so friendly and placid that I wouldnt want to upset her with a grumpy pig! lol

Mangalitza's are the worst rooters I have EVER owned......you would have NO grazing left for your kunekune after 24hrs of a mangalitza arriving!
Trust me - I have both (& 9 other breeds too).
You would definatly be better off with another kunekune for company!

OH....& I forgot to add.........extremly temperamental. Nice when they are in a good mood - VERY dangerous when in a bad mood (I have the war wounds to proove it & these are the sows, not my boar).

Personally, I would try to track down another Kune, but if your looking for a different breed, in my experiance, the Large Blacks & British Lops are just soo friendly, are good grazers - but they do still root too.

The middle whites are abit 'flighty' with strangers, but when they get to know you, are so loving, some of them are like the kunes with minimal rooting, but the ones that do root usually try to get to China.

Just stay away from the mangalitza's.........

Temperamental, destructive & GREAT ploughs!!!!! (they do taste lovely though - apart from the 3" of fat you get on them - even if they live on next to nothing

)

I know someone on the north coast who might have a surplus Kune.
