Advice for wannabe kunekune owner

Post by Piglet » Thu May 16, 2019 9:10 pm

I really want to have a kunekune to add to my 'menagerie'. I have 2 dressage horses, a donkey, 20 sheep, numerous pekin bantams, guninea fowl, ducks and geese. I have grandchildren who want Granny to have a pig and a kunekune has always appealed. I have 8 acres of grass paddocks. My questions are:
1. Am I best to have 2 kunekunes or will 1 be happy living with everything else?
2. Am I right in thinking that an 8' x 4' arc is sufficient?
3. Other than grass what else should I feed?
4. Where do I find suitable piglets?
5. Am I mad?!!
I'd be grateful for any advice. A good, free range home is guaranteed!!

1. Am I best to have 2 kunekunes or will 1 be happy living with everything else?
They are herd animals so are always happier with 2 (or more). You shouldn't really keep one on its own.

2. Am I right in thinking that an 8' x 4' arc is sufficient?
A 6'x3' is enough for 2 fully grown kunes. When they are younger a dog kennel filled with straw is big enough.

3. Other than grass what else should I feed?
Fruit, veg and/or commercial pig rolls. But its a bigger subject so buy a book.

4. Where do I find suitable piglets?
On the BKKPS website.

5. Am I mad?!!
Definitely not. But go and see some - most breeders will be happy to have you visit.
