Training pigs to place their droppings in one place

Post by MargaretMiles » Tue Jun 14, 2016 1:37 pm

Some years ago, I had a pair of kunekune pigs (from 3 months old) and they naturally placed all their droppings in one corner. The next pair I had did not do this. I now have a new pair of piglets (3 months old). Does anyone have any ideas how to train the piglets to do their droppings in one place ? Thanks.

Some seem more keen to do this than others. Certainly when bad habits are established you are unlikely to have much success in changing the behaviour later.

But I think the most important thing to help them learn this behaviour is to move any muck into a heap rather than removing it.
If the 'bed' area is too large they are less likely to keep it clean, so restrict the amount of straw to one corner and have somewhere else as your much heap.
Someone else told me to have some sand in a similar way to a cat's litter tray, but this didn't work for me.
