Advice on paddock management

Post by Linzwhit1 » Fri Mar 08, 2019 8:50 am

Hi, I was just wondering if anyone has any advice on paddock management. My 3 kunekune pigs are 5mths old and are turning the ground over at a tremendous rate. I’m having to move them every couple of days and with the recent weather and the fact that we have clay like soil you can imagine the mess. The pigs are filthy and I know they like to be clean and dry. It’s the first time I’ve kept pigs so any advice would be very much appreciated. :D

Hi, there has been plenty of discussion on this forum - if you just search for rooting.

At this time of year there will be no nutrition left in the grass. If they get hungry they will dig down for whatever they can find. Confine them to a smaller 'sacrifice' area until spring comes. When the ground is drier it is much harder work to root, and they might not bother if there is plenty of grazing to be done. A dry supply of hay will give them something to chew on and occupy their time for now. But read all the other discussions....
