I'd have loved to attend your course, but distance a bit to much for me - we're in Cumbria and I have a 10month old "piglet" of my own. I wonder if I can ask a couple of questions as I've been reading Carol Harris' book this mornign and have got myself into a panic! (Feel a very bag piggy parent for...

Cool, thanks for the replies. I think we'd prob have to get them castrated then, as although we could keep them seperate from the girls (their mum and aunt) it would be v tricky.

New to breeding

Is there somewhere I can get info on "pig" birth etc. We think our girls are in pig and due in Apr/May. They have suitable indoor accomodation, and we need to get heat lamps, but I want to read all I can and I'm assuming it's all been written about somewhere!!

To Castrate or not to Castrate?

It is a question we're struggling to answer following Jamie's pork program. (apols to those who keep KKs as pets...) We've hopefully got piglets due in April/May and if we're realisitc in these money tight times, then the boys will prob end up in the freezer. If we plan to "send them to the great pi...

How do I choose what bloodlines are acceptable?

We're looking to breed our girls - how do the the bloodlines work, i.e. what's acceptable and what's not? Is there somewhere i can read about it? (i'm sure it must have been dealt with a billion times already!)

Hi Katherine We recently took our 3 boys at 10 months old. Not sure what they weighed though. Smaller than normal pigs but big enough. Joints look a perfect size for 4 people! I completely agree about the Happy Pork principle. that's why we got piggies. And taking them to the abatoir was really fine...

Hiya I just wanted to say thanks for your help & advice regardign Ear Tags. Got them from Ketchums - got 10 metal tags and the pliers (?20 plus vat). Was a bit horrified when I saw them as Ithought they looked like they'd cause lot of pain putting then, so investigated Slap marking instead as friend...

Thanks Di.
They are for slaughter - still in theory at this stage. That's the intention, but I'm 6 months pregnant and hormones may yet get the better of me!
:)
Do you have to use metal tags for slaughter? Or can I use the plastic ones?

Ear Tags

Hi I need to mark my pigs for movement - and I understand they will need eartags, tattoos or double slapmarks. Where do you get these things from? Our girls have rather natty KuneKune ear tags but the boys don't have ear tags. I suspect they're going to hurt when we put them in - is this the case do...

I've voted "yes" as this is what we bought the piglets for - 3 boys and 2 girls. The aim is to breed from the girls and eat the boys - the boys are 10 months old this month so we reckon they're ready to go. they finally look big enough!

What age/size are other people sending their pigs?
