Suprise Litter!

Well obviously not a total suprise - we knew she was in pig! But her 116 days aren't up until Sat adn she showed absolutely no sign of farrowing yesterday. I got up this morning, went to feed them and she had 8 beautiful piglets. There was no nesting, no restlessness, no milk from the teats if you s...

hernias

apologies for asking about this - I know it was covered in a newsletter but I can't seem to find. anyway... ... the vet came and castrated our boys, but one of the three he suspected had a hernia - suspect no more! it's huge. the Vet said he'd look at him again when he came to castrate our other gil...

Fighting Piglets

We have two piglets that are fighting over the same teat. We can't intervene as they're in an arc in the field and if we try to intervene mum gets upset and stops feeding. They're both doing okay - not the biggest or fattest, but okay - we think this is because they're sharing a front teat and both ...

Just to let you know that the vet's been out. He said she has got a mild case of mastitis - clearly not really bothering her, but we'retreating with penicilin for the next few days to clear it up. While he was here he castrated our boys. Eeek. I was very brave and held them for him. It was all very ...

Thanks so much. I totally agree about the engorged udders because of the interruption to the feeding. The two that aren't doing as well as the others we offered some extra milk after they'd all fed - one had somethe other wasn't that interested - we put them back with Mum straight after and they've ...

Escapees from the outside creep

hmm... creep boards outside are 9" and mum can barely get over them. But baby's have started escaping over them - 6 days old. I know they can climbout of 12" high boxes so what should we do...

Mastitis...

Our sow has lost 3 piglets who were feeding - I wonder if that's what started her milk problems. She has definite lump udders - some lumpy some okay. the back ones are sore -as she won't let me touch them. I breastfed my baby and I know what it's like to get blocked ducts - which is what I think her...

Mastitis, Hand rearing, Escapees... it's all happening!

We started with 13... ... 1 died coz we missed the start of the birth - I think she was waiting tol we away. Well, we thought we'd try him on a plate and he's instantly lapped all that up. he's already a diff pig. I wish now we'd tried feedign him outside first so he could have stayed with the others but he's here now. I have a 10 month old baby - I still get up at 4am... this feels like when we first brou...

Handrearing - How much and what?

We've decided to bring our runt in - he know he had a few feeds in the first 24 hours but since then we suspect he's had nothing and he's got quite lethargic. I have baby milk in the house - so I offered him a 50:50 mix - milk to water. I understand it's okay to use baby milk, but I'm not sure how m...

Keeping the Arc door shut

Our piglets are now 2 days old, they're in the field in an arc and all seem okay. Until this afternoon she was happy to be shut in at night - it was warm today so we had the door open most of the day - it was toasty in the arc. But now it's come to nighttime she's refusing to have the door shut. Not...

Thanks so much for the offer Simon - I have a friend who's a pig breeder locally so she's helped out. The big news is that the first sow farrowed last night - 13 piglets!!! One was stillborn and another died later but 11... eek, I hope the other doesn't have quite so many! Haven't had chance yet to ...
