Rooting

Regarding kunes rooting, an eighty year old pig farmer gave me some good advice last winter: when feeding pig nuts, scatter them on old sheets of corrugated metal. At least it stops them rooting for the smell of an elusive pig nut.

Wendy, have you tried putting them on the River cottage Forum? There seem to be a lot of people using it who are into wild boar. May be worth a go? Good luck.

I had my male piglets castrated at two weeks old.The vet said it was the perfect age as he needed the testicles to be a certain size for the procedure. We held the piglets while he did it, five were done in less than twenty minutes. They went straight back to the sow and had a feed!

I have nineteen kunekunes and none of them do that.Do they have access to water all the time or is the trough refilled when they are fed? I have never seen anything like it!

Feeding Piglets

I have nine kune piglets, all doing well on their mothers milk.Do I give them pig nuts when they leave the creche? How much do I give them? They are eleven days old at present, their field has very lush red clover pasture.

Company for Boar

I am about to move my Boar away from my pregnant sow into a new paddock.I am thinking of putting his five month old intact son with him for company. As it will be neutral territory, would this work? Or am I asking for trouble? The paddock is out of sight of any sows.

My pregnant sow has an ark 8'x6' and we want to give the piglets the best chance of survival. What height should an internal rail be for kune piglets? Also what size and height would be best for the outside creche?

Hi jundor,Sorry but I would need them to be registered with the kunekune society as I have a lovely Boar they could go with, but I would not breed from stock which is not pedigree. Is there any way that the person who gave them to you still has the original papers?
