Sounds like they are being naughty teenagers, they are thinking why wait for the pig nuts when we can just help ourselfs.Try keeping the pig nuts as far away from their field as you can. They will also be after the hens food and will stop at nothing to reach it.Kunes are always hungry, its just in thei...

Hi Cath, my kunes are freerange,I always put the pregnant sow in a seperate ark just before farrowing.I help to deliver the piglets, cleaning them off and put them in a box until she has finished then make sure they all get the vital colostrum.I dont use heat lamps or iron injections.

Thistles

Last year I saw my two sows who were about to farrow eating large quantities of thistles.Yesterday a different sow who had a cut on her ear after a fight spent all day eating thistles.I looked up thistles as a medicine; To help encourage good milk production, also used to pump out poisons via circulat...

Thanks Wendy, thats interesting.Next question,do the pigs prone to hair loss have fine silky hair or thick hair? Straight or curly? Also are they related either by mother or father? Sorry for all the questions but I am looking at the genetic side of the problem.

Hair loss coat colour

I am looking into extreme hair loss in kunekunes. After speaking to other owners it looks as though black pigs are more prone to seasonal hair loss than other colours.I would be interested in other peoples views regarding this.Have any of you had non black pigs with hair loss?

I have never seen my kunes take any interest in Ash or Sycamore branches, they have access to a variety of trees but never touch them. The pigs concentrate on the grass, but my goats will choose trees over every thing :)

We keep Anglo Nubian goats and they are fine with our kunekunes.Just dont feed them together or you may get flattened in the rush!

Hi Caroline, its not your fault about the piglets you have lost,I would offer the remaining piglets some baby milk as a top up when the sow is grazing. They will still feed from her as well.Regarding piglets escaping from the creche, try adding a little more height, the sow will jump in and out.Someti...

Hi Caroline, I have plastic door strips on my arks to stop the wind. Also if you have the outdoor piglet creche it will prevent the piglets escaping but mum can get out to grass. If you give me your email address I will send you some photos of our outdoor farrowing setup.

All my kunes farrow in outdoor arks.I use planks about twelve inches high as an outside creep area and have home made farrowing rails inside the ark.I dont use any heat lamps as I only breed between April and september. The piglets will stay behind the rails out of harms way, luckily I have never lost...

Kune entire males are willing and able to mate before they are six months old,one of mine was a father to two litters. :o If you decide not to castrate just make sure they are not kept with any females. :)
