Re: How do I register a pig

I realise you are asking about tattooing - the rules are the same for either.

We don't tattoo Kunekune for registering as pedigree we ear tag.

Please email me if all this is just confusing and I will try and explain :?

Re: How do I register a pig

Hello there, Unfortunately you cannot register the pig as a pedigree pig yourself. The breeder must register and tag the pig with the BKKPS before they leave the breeder's holding. This type of registering is for PEDIGREE pigs and is not linked to the requirements of defra. The rules for tagging pig...

Re: Dead piglets

I forgot to mention that I find Kunekune far more likely to take amniotic fluid into their lungs at birth and this is often a cause for concern because in the long run I find it can lead to piglets dying the following day or a couple of weeks later especially if infection sets in. I always carefully...

Re: Dead piglets

In Selenium deficiency you generally see one of two things - piglets with very weak/lose joints so they are low on their pasterns and sloppy in their walking. They also frequently scour but not always the case. The other thing I am aware of that selenium deficiency causes (for the same reasons as th...

Re: Coughing

He probably simply had something caught in his throat. I would keep an eye on him and see if he does this at other times. I would be looking for such things as if he is off his food, acting differently, lying in his bed and not moving, coughing more often or has a temperature........then I would cal...

Re: 4 year old castrates for meat

I would take advice from your butcher. Usually four year old pigs of any pig breed would be used for sausages as, at this stage, the meat can be tough and particularly fatty. It is still worth asking your butcher to check cuts and make suggestions though. I rely on mine to do that for me and butcher...

These posts are really helpful for others who may find themselves in a similar situation. Thank you for posting and for the feed back. I wonder if you might consider us turning this into an article in our Newsletter so we can potentially help others in spotting this problem. If you would be happy to...

Re: Slap or Tag ?

Holding numbers, herd mark numbers and identifying your pigs are legal requirements; tagging etc for moving them once they are 12 months old or if going to an abattoir. Many people remain oblivious to this if the breeder of the pigs does not make it a clear requirement when you purchase. ALL breeder...

Re: Locking piglets in at night

I lock mine in at night until a couple of weeks after they are weaned unless there are any that are particularly small. The million dollar question is how small is small!! I can honestly say it is not scientific, I look at them, lift them and if I felt they are too light and not wriggly enough to es...

Re: Boar Piglets Te Whangi/Awakino lines

There are vastly different weights for Kunekune piglets and this continues through to adult life. Factors affecting the weight are size of litter, size of the parents, birth weight of piglet, illness, disease, mother's mothering ability/milk production just to name a few! I have learnt that what one...

Re: molasses

I have not heard anywhere that it is bad for them but would think that, as kunekune tend to become fatties, you would need to carefully monitor the affect the feed had on their condition. I feed beet pulp to my sows for two to three weeks before they farrow to keep them regular and to keep energy le...

Re: Help with my 2 x sows

Hi Lorraine, Hope your girls have settled a little, I agree with what Wendy has said. In addition I would also make the following suggestions, If you bought your pigs from a breeder who is a member of the Society, and local to you, they should be able to offer you good advice and support with these ...

Re: Overnight

Hi there, Most of my pigs live in 4 acres of woodland and pasture. They range in age from 8 weeks to 8 years and they all have open access to their bedrooms. They tend to stay in bed all night and only come out in the morning for their ritualistic pee and poo, just before breakfast, even though the ...
