Is anyone in Northern Ireland looking for Kunekunes ?

Hi folks, I've been approached about taking a young Kunekune boar across to Northern Ireland, but obviously the travel costs for moving just one pig don't really justify the expense  If anyone in Northern Ireland is looking for pigs - either breeding or as outdoor pets please pop a note here or...

Re: Hernias!!

I've not had an umbilical hernia in any of my Kunes (touch wood !) in my pigs case it's scrotial/inguinal hernias we've seen.
I'm afraid i don't know any further sources of info online, others might though....thoughts anyone ?

Re: Hernias!!

I've been looking into it too - but like Wendy, nothing conclusive :? I thought it was our original Te Whangi boar who had a problem (it wasn't) I've used other boars (Andrew & Ru) and other sows but haven't found a real difference... I've read that some people think it's down to the handling of the...

Re: A new Dawn for the Kune?

Martin Snell very kindly travelled all the way from Devon to the north of Scotland last year to judge the pig classes at the Scottish Smallholder & Grower Festival. He saw quite a lot of Kunekunes there :D and perhaps some of the enthusiasm for keeping these charismatic little pigs rubbed off on him...

Re: Overdue expectant mums

Sorry I've not been back before now ! I did have my dates wrong  My little sow farrowed on 13th July, producing 15 piglets  :D (worth waiting for !) but there's no sign of either of the younger ones (her daughters) farrowing :? Neither of them look to be coming into season, there was de...

Overdue expectant mums

Hi guys :D Okay, I have a quandry and need some advice  I have 3 Kunekunes who (I'm fairly certain, but more on that in a mo) are in pig (one sow and 2 gilts) by my reckoning they were due on 26th of May - that's 120 days since we took the boar out of the field and put him in his colditz style...

Re: Need help! think 2 week old piglet is dying

My heart was in my mouth reading your thread JessieMay - we had a similar thing with a week old piglet who sadly didn't make it :(
But what a wonderful end to your story :D Hope the little one continues to get on well, are you naming it "Brandy" ?

Re: Incidence of hernia's in kunekune boars

I'll expand a bit on exactly what happened with my last ones, incase it helps anyone - we had 2 boars going for closed castration at 7 weeks old with the vet. Let's call them Vic & Bob  Vic the bigger of the two weighed in at 22.3Kg and had a larger hernia than Bob, who weighed 17.8Kg (so neit...

Re: Incidence of hernia's in kunekune boars

Thanks for your replies folks :D Hmmmm, it would seem there's absolutely no pattern whatsoever then :? But still only a few examples so there's still time for something to emerge  Alison, I don't think it's mishandling either (at least not always) - we've not had a lot of holding/lifting of th...

Re: late farrowing

She'll be glad of the rest and peace & quiet  You could try taking her out for a walk if you get a nice dry day - just a 5 or 10 minute stroll in the fresh air round the paddock (a rattling feed bucket will ensure she follows you and goes back into the stable after) Unlike my little madam who ...

Re: late farrowing

Or he was really wrong and she's still another fortnight away
That's the thing with pigs......they have a habit of surprising you
She'll have them when she's ready, not much more you can do than wait it out
Hope it all goes well,
Karen

Re: Incidence of hernia's in kunekune boars

Thanks for your reply Wendy (and come on everyone else  ) Interesting comment about the Andrew line - my last boar was Te Whangi (with no Andrew in the pedigree) and the sow was Awakino (and again no Andrew anywhere in the history) three litters ago we had a piglet (from a litter of 9 - 6 boar...

Incidence of hernia's in kunekune boars

Hiya folks, Following on from sadly losing one of my young boars following a routine castration, I'm doing a bit of research which will hopefully prove helpful to all Kune owners/breeders BUT I need more information than just my own and I'm hoping you'll all be able to help  I was going to try...

Re: Entire Boar For Sale

Where are you Ellie ? I'm in central Scotland & interested...........but it all comes down to distance  If you're not too far away could you email me some photo's please ? My email is kkjmckay@aol.com (but don't send photo's if you couldn't deliver - I don't do well seeing something I can't ha...
