Re: Sows or boars

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder! I have some very pretty sows & some really ugly ones, the same as the boars, some are handsome, others look like they really could do with a face lift. Just go for the pigs you like, regardless of sex & you will love them no matter what they grow up like later o...

 Never thought to look at the date!
I thought it was strange that you were exporting again so soon.

Re: Pedigree Ear Tags

That is right Di, any pig under 1 year old can legally be moved with a blue dot, red line or a black cross as a temporary mark. Any of the other breeds of pig that I breed, which may meet the breed standard of registration, tagged, tattoed &/or notched at weaning (8 weeks), which I do believe should...

 Tried apples, milk, mixed fruit, everything to try & get it in, the vet was the final option. Bless him. I'd rather tag them when they are small & the ears not quite as tough.

Re: Pedigree Ear Tags

I understand that alot of poeple would rather not tag & at first, I was against it too. The BPA do actually insist on 2 forms of identification of any pig that is to be registered (& meat pigs are supposed to have the same - NOT that I bother tagging, tattoing or notching the meatpigs when a slap ma...

Re: Pedigree Ear Tags

I do actually think the pedigree tag SHOULD be put in by the breeder & not sent to the buyer for the reason you have stated, most buyers don't own a set of pliers & won't go out & buy a set to put a couple of tags in a couple of pigs ears if they have bought them just as pets. Alot of people actuall...

Re: what do we want ?

Just reading the post 'Are we expecting or not' and maybe something we could do with is pregnancy testing kits available in small quantities? Actually Di, it would be quite handy that. I know Pedro said that you can get them by the 100 in the US, but most of us are in the UK. I also know you can ge...

Re: Are we expecting or not?

I think my main problem is that she does honestly look pregnant, but she is still very 'active' with the boar. What we could really do with is some sort of 'clear blue' pregnancy test for pigs, you know, something disposable that will let you know in minutes if they are expecting or not for this typ...

Re: Are we expecting or not?

Pseudo pregnancy! She would likely sucessfully suckle a litter if offered. Can happen in almost every mammal, although it is uncommon in pigs... unlike bitches who often have phantom pregnancies, which is a perfectly NORMAL phenomenon ~ designed in the wild canine to feed alpha litter if their moth...

Re: Are we expecting or not?

is there any other sign of pregnancy ? belly lowered or hardening? changes in her vulva? Sorry Wendy, this was the only bit I meant to quote - when I first got her she was so fat that she has been on a diet, she can now run accross the pen. She does have a low belly & the more I look at her, the mo...

Re: Are we expecting or not?

a sow can definitely produce milk whether in pig or not. if the piglets are sucking from her they will get her hormones going and she will produce milk. she may well be in pig even though the boar is serving her but i would say that is unusual. is there any other sign of pregnancy ? belly lowered o...

Are we expecting or not?

Right, I am totally baffled with my sow! Every month she has been served by Rupert, the most recent time only 10 days ago. As she is being served, I am assuming she is not 'catching on', so have just left them too it. This is where it starts getting confusing - around halloween, my other sow died le...
