Ours were about 5 months when we got them but they went straight onto sow and weaner rolls plus bruised barley.

They also got fresh veg and whatever took their fancy in their paddock.

I don't think you're allowed to just bury pig carcasses.

Try the following website for the National Fallen Stock Company:

Thanks Wendy, I think that's the way I'll go - metal tags. Not looking forward to doing the actual deed though.

That was my immediate thought - doesn't look like our Kunes when they were piglets. It's not a brilliant photo though. Is that banana skins and apple peelings she's been feeding him?

Tagging and Identification

Our three Kunes are approaching five months old now and I've been thinking what to do about tagging them. These are pet pigs - not for slaughter - so I was thinking along the lines of fitting the round polyurethane ear tags but was also thinking about the traditional metal tags. What's everyone's th...

No problem with castrating at 8 weeks although a vet will need to do it. Castrates won't grow tusks (or so I'm told - I've yet to put it to the test.) Do you know what breed the sire was? It might have a bearing upon the eventual size of the fuly grown pig. One other thing - one pig on his own won't...

Yes ours love carrots, too. I rarely get away with a trip to the shed without being spotted, and having to bribe them with a few carrots to make them shut up.

Can't say that I've heard of that before. Talk about bad luck.

Sounds a great little fighter though.

Actually, I sometimes wonder if our boys don't have an extra eye, maybe in the back of their heads, cos they never seem to miss anyone heading for the feed shed.

Two of ours (Hagrid and Hamish) have two piri but the third (Hector) doesn't have any. They're all catrated males from the same litter. Hector is quite a bit smaller than the other two though.

I'm pleased to learn she's recovering, Wendy.

What an ordeal for her to have to go through at such a young age, though.

We've got three Kunes. Pics here: Link to Flickr

We've got about half an acre which seems enough for them. They share it with our small flock of hens.

Our hens and Kunes share space - no problems to date.

The hens are quick enough to get out of the way of the hogs and are in at the thick of it when the pigs are being fed.
