piglet castration

Our vet charged around ?6 pounds each but we did have 11 boys for him to do. I had to hold them whilst the deed was done and the noise was ear splitting!! In fact the vet offered me ear protectors. Its funny how every pig is different- despite being the best of mates before their piglets were born, ...

temporary marks

Can anyone advise me what is the best way to place a temporary mark on a black piglet? I've tried yellow sheep spray and although it shows up well initially its gone after a few hours. Although this might be good enough for movement purposes where the journey is short I have two litters which are go...

sow for sale

Registered 18 month old black sow for sale, Penrith, Cumbria.
Tutaki/rebecca gina. Friendly and easy to handle. Has successfully raised 9 piglets. Sorry to see her go but there's a limit to the number of pigs one family can keep- 18 at the moment.

harness

Never applied for one as I don't intend taking my piglets off our holding. However you presumably contact animal health/defra. They will look at the route you propose to take and assess any potential risks to other livestock and grant a licence or not depending on the circumstances.

harness

Hi Lucy. There's a discussion about harnesses earlier on in this forum- meadowsweat 29th June which may be helpful. I've just bought a halter-type dog harness for my piglets- wont last them very long as they're growing so quickly but I wanted to make an early start training them. Haven't had much lu...

piglet training

How do you pick up a piglet for a cuddle without it squealing and struggling so much you have to give up? Mine love being scratched/tickled and will roll over in delight at the attention, but hate being lifted off the ground. Is a month old too early to try introducing them to a lead? What age is be...

thin sows

I went back and weighed what I'd been giving- rather than just estimating - it was more like 3 lbs and the same weight of veg and a half sack of grass daily. Obviously not enough- I've increased in line with your advice. I guess I thought the half pound of feed for each piglet was from when they sta...

thin sows

Oh poor things- I feel aweful. With all the advice not to over feed kks I've obviously gone to the other extreme!
Thanks so much for all your advice- a great help when you're doing this for the first time.

piglets and water

At what age do piglets start drinking water? What sort of container is recommended for piglets- ie one they can reach but wont be tipped over?

light and heat lamps

How long is it advised to keep heat lamps on over the creep area ie at what age can they be turned off? Also I've been leaving a light on in the barn at night since the piglets were born- is it ok to turn it off now- they're nearly 3 weeks old and know their way around their pen pretty well now.

weaning

My piglets are now nearly 3 weeks old and I'm beginning to consider how I'll manage them once they're weaned. Although I guess it would be most satisfactory to keep similarly aged pigs together ie the young ones apart from the mature pigs, from a practical point of view it would be most convenient t...

thin sows

I guess it's expected that sows will lose condition after they have had a litter. However I have been a bit alarmed at how thin my two have become - their backs feel quite bony. I'm feeding them about 2 pounds of pellets a day plus carrots apples and pears along with grass I cut for them when the we...
