Re: Nose rings?

pigs root i'm afraid. whatever their size or breed. So glad to hear that your vet had been advised against it. Ringing is a barbaric practice that denies the pig its most natural pastime. Is it possible to restrict them to a smaller area which you can 'sacrifice' during the winter months and then pu...

thank you - glad you found the articles useful. It is one of those subjects most of us don't think of until the time comes - and then we have no time to think

Re: should boars be castrated before sale?

i would second Sam's opinion here - there is always the risk that pigs sold for meat do not end up as meat....

Re: Can someone help please place by jaw on boar

this is not an abcess but a fairly common fault in the kunekune. i have had three pigs with it and i know of several others. it is caused by compacted food collecting in the jaw cavity and it then comes out through the side of the face. i have lots of photos of this and once wrote an article for the...

Re: Harnesses

that is excellent news :) i rather smugly knew that would be the case but you have to 'suck it and see' with kunes as people are never convinced of how easy they are till they have them . don't worry about your vet - that is often the way with pigs and vets - just make sure you have one of those thi...

Re: Kune teeth

i'm afraid i can't tell you much about dental treatment inpigs because there isn't any but i think you are doing absolutely the right thing in soaking the food. as long as your pig has plenty of time to eat his food without competition i'm sure he will be fine. i have recently lost my two oldest kun...

Re: Death of a pig

you can introduce a new pig - the best way to do this is to keep them separated but able to talk to each other through a fence or gate for about a week. when you take the plunge and put them together for the first time, try to do it on neutral ground so neither one will be territorial and give them ...

Re: Harnesses

Hello, i would say that harnesses on pigs are purely for asthetic purposes - once the pig is half grown it will be far too strong to hold on a harness . the best way to restrain a kunekune for the vet is with a tummy scratch! food is also useful in these circumstances and if all else fails then reso...
