What is the definition of 'breeding'. The date the sow went to the boar, or the date the sow was served, or the date the piglets were born, or some other criteria?

I think you were right to refuse Di. I had a lady who wanted a Kune as a companion for a micro pig. I wouldn't sell one as you have no way of knowing how big the micro pig would get or what its temperament was like. Also the micro pig was not castrated.

Hi Jenny, I find that calculating my pigs weight by measuring them very useful, especially if they need medication. The way i do this is by measuring the length (from between the ears to the base of the tail) and the girth (just behind the front legs) in centimetres. Then girth X girth X length divi...

Hi Di, Yes I did take them to C & S Meats. Sue came and held my hand!!! They were really friendly and helpfull and in no great hurry, which was good as I always get nervous. Although I am really pleased with the end result, and will definitely do it again, I don't think I will ever get used it. Carol

I sent 2 boars off last year at 10 months old, they were a good size and the sausages and joints tasted great - no sign of any taint. I sent 2 more off last week at 1 year old, as they were quite small - and had the sausages made gluten free. Tried them yesterday and they taste just as good as the f...

Hi Ann,
I am glad you have found what you are looking for. I hope you get as much pleasure out of having your own piglets as I have.

If anyone else is looking for an entire boar then I have 2 Te whangi/Jenny boars that are 8 months old. I also have 2 gilts Awakino/Te whangi that are 9 months old.

I agree, a very interesting article. On the topic of putting different breeds together, has anyone ever crossed a kune with another breed? Is it possible?

If you tie hurdles together with baler twine where they link at the top AND the bottom it works quite well. The combined weight will stop the sow unless she is really determined. Even if you decide to put weights on the bottom still tie them together as she only has to lift them a few inches to unho...

My sow had just 2 piglets in September and one of them was half the size of the other. She kept going round in circles. She only seemed to do it if she got excited or agitated. If I saw here going in circles I encouraged her to walk straight. She seemed to grow out of by the time she was a couple of...

My 2 girls very rarely root, but I put them in our small orchard last autumn as the grass was quite long and they started rooting. They made a real mess of the orchard - much to my husbands annoyance. So I moved them out and they didn't root again. I concluded that, as pigs have a very good sense of...

Mud

I am on clay so it is very soggy!! My girls don't root very much but the boys have already started. It's worst where I throw their nuts so am now feeding them in their own bowls. This seems to be working at the moment as they haven't caused any more damage.
