Re: KUNES FOR MEAT ADVICE WANTED PLEASE!
Sorry 117lbs was the sausages from 4 after doing chops and joints. So approx 28lbs per pig of sausages + chops and back legs. OR 70 lbs sausages if you do ALL the pig to sausages.

Re: KUNES FOR MEAT ADVICE WANTED PLEASE!
Sorry to take so long its been a hectic week. I took 4 kunekunes back in the summer and got the following. 8 boned and rolled back legs averaging 6lb each (after boning). 28 chops per pig and 4 chops weighed 1.25lbs. (4 x 28 total) 117lbs sausages. I charge £3 per lb (about 6 or 7 sausages). If I ma...

Re: Preparing for farrowing
To this I would add: mobile phone, flask of tea or coffee, something to sit on and the number of your friendly vet if only for moral support when things don't seem to be going quite right!!

Re: KUNES FOR MEAT ADVICE WANTED PLEASE!
Hi Michelle I find KKs fantastic for meat. I free range them until they are about 7 - 8 months old. They are sometimes more free range than they should be when they escape. They are fed sow rolls or sow nuts - not sure how many - probably 2 scoops a day. I only feed in the morning as I am lazy and t...

This decision is of course only the individual can make. However, I have heard people say the same about their dogs 'oh, he's only being playful' then you hear on the news that a child has been killed by a pet dog!! Its a matter of choice. Do you risk a child or yourself being seriously injured beca...

I took my 4 on Sunday and will be collecting the pork tomorrow and the sausages next week. Our abbatoir (C & S Meats) has a butchery attached and I get them to do it all (lazy I know). I will let you know the cost next week. I am always pleased with what they do. My kunekunes were born 16th Feb so 7...

It seems a lot of people are asking this same question. I can only tell you my experiences. The meat is superb. The first couple I had made totally into sausages because I had been told that's all they were good for. You get about 70lbs of sausages per pig. Had no trouble selling these and people ca...

My boar just loves the wallow - the muddier he is the better. However the sows seem quite happy to lie in the shade or in the fence. They will occasionally tip their water over but seem to find the grass is cool enough. I would think that as long as there is shade, water and a wallow available then ...

I am a little concerned that you are talking about a pig ie one. Pigs are very social animals and you need to keep at least 2 together for company. One alone will be a very miserable, lonely little thing and no, dogs, cats, humans, donkeys, sheep and anything else will not be good enough. Sorry, lec...

Hi Wendy My castrations were costing about the same as yours. Like you my vet does gas sedative and stitches because of the risk of hernia. Then of course there are antibiotic jabs. Part of the reason why I am afraid all the boars go for sausages, unless someone specifically wants, and pays a deposi...
