Re: Pig Water Trough

A shallow bucket stood in an old car tyre works well too. Or and old stone Belfast type sink with the plug hole blocked up.

Re: Please Help...!

Was the pig vaccinated for erisypalis? I lost a young pig about 18 months ago - was rearing it for meat and although Mum was covered I didn't vaccinate these as they were going for slaughter at 6 months! (We all live and learn). Similar symptoms and wobbly on legs the day before he died. I had actua...

Re: Overdue expectant mums

I always work on the 3 months, 3 weeks, 3 days and then assume it could be up to 10 days over possibly. So give it a bit longer. Signs of milk would seem positive I have had sows go over by more than 7 days and everything has been fine.

Let us know how you get on.

Re: Skinny Piggie

I found this interesting to read. I have an older sow (about 7) who raised 2 piglets last November/December. I put her back in with the boar in February and she is looking quite thin, although she has always been a well rounded pig. She has been wormed but she does exactly as you are describing. Gra...

Re: Best way to restrain a KK for an injection?

I must be very lucky. I did all mine yesterday, including the boar and just put their sow rolls on the ground and while they are eating I scratch with a finger nail behind the ear then quickly replace finger nail with needle. Often I get no response at all, sometimes just a grunt!! I think speed is ...

I get my vaccine from the vet. About the same price as you are quoting.

Re: Dry cracking skin

kunekunes tend to lose their hair from time to time. Possibly hormonal. A couple of the sows have bald patches which will grow back and then disappear again. My boar is now almost bald on his back end but it doesn't seem to bother him. Pig oil will help stop the skin cracking and keep it moist.

Nick Hunkin

Have just read in the paper that Nick Hunkin has died after a short illness. Some of you may remember Nick as commentator at the various shows - Bath and West, Newbury, Dorchester. He was very knowledgeable where pigs were concerned and also gave a very lively and entertaining commentary. He was exc...

Sherborne Castle Country Fair, Dorset.

I have been asked again if I would be interested in doing a kunekune stand at this show. Its on the Bank Holiday Monday 4th June. I am not sure that I can do this and wondered if anyone else would. This is a small show but very interesting with a great variety of animals and displays going on. You a...

Re: Boar smell

I keep a full boar, 3 sows and 1 infertile gilt. I have never noticed any smell from the boar. He does bump the others especially when there is food around. He also foams/slobbers when eating but so do my girls, sometimes more than others. Don't know why your castrate smells as I have never had this...

Re: injections

Definately inject for erysipelas. I have always done my breeding sows and boar and any piglets being sold but didn't bother with the piglets which were being reared for meat. Then last year I had a lovely boar die at 6 months old.The vet said it was erysipelas. She explained that the germ was in th...

Please don't send them to market you don't know what will happen to them. Far kinder, in my opinion, to take them for slaughter and butchery yourself.

Well there doesn't seem much wrong with them! Yes they usually start pinching Mum's food at about 2 weeks. Now you will see them grow.

Good luck

Sorry just read the ad properly and see that one is an entire boar so not suitable.
