I keep my KKs with my saanen goat (was 2 until but 1 unfortunately died recently) they get along fine, however the goats are definately 'top dog' and can push the KKs around sometimes! I wouldn't have horned goats with them!

We do the same we have dug out a shallow wallow which we fill up with water. The pigs love laying in it and getting muddy! They definately need a wallow in the summer when it is hot as they cannot sweat like us and can overheat.

Good advice Claire - a couple of years ago one of my girls was lame so I examined her and found a large nail stuck in her pad! she was fine once I had pulled it out!

Thanks for your reply Simon. I
have both castrated and entire boars and their tusks are of equal length. I waited all day for the vet to ring and as soon as I popped out for 5 mins I missed his call  I will definately speak to him tomorrow.

I am always suprised when i hear people say that their KK's dig because I have 5 KK and none of them have ever dug nor their piglets while on our land. I wonder if it is something to do with the type of soil?

Tusk problem

A few days ago I thought the cheek of my castrated male seemed a bit swollen (he is 3 yrs old) This morning when I woke him up his tusk has dug into the side of his face (external not internal) and made it bleed. If their hair loss is extreme then it could be mange or mites as Simon has suggested, however if it is just thinning then it could be down to their bedding. They are heavy animals and need a good layer of fresh hay to lie on.

Gilt

I am looking for a new home for one of my gilts she is 3 yrs old and the sister of my boar so I would rather rehome her than keep on frustrating Welly when she is in season and he wants to get to her.
