Bush foot - hoof rot - bumble feet

Hello, In the past 6 litters I never encounter any problems with the hoofs of the piglets. In the current 2 litters (13 piglets, 4 weeks old) five piglets have a swollen and infected hoof! The are on a thick bed of straw with free access outdoors. Sows get the same feed as other years. It is always ...

Dead piglets

I had some bad luck with my recent litters: I lost 4 piglets out of 20. They all were breathing rapidly, off feed, slow. They all got one or several shots of Baytrill (which should be a strong antibiotic) from the vet. When I found them dead there was blood on their noses and mouth. Some died after ...

Re: Colors for registration

Thanks Simon for the quick respons. I saw some other notifications with BR/CR, so I'll be not the only one with this problem.
I'll register them as B/W.

Does the Amercican Association uses a different color scheme (with Br/W)?

Re: Colors for registration

But then there is a difference between notification and registration, will that not be a problem?

Colors for registration

I have a small problem for registration of my piglets. In the litter notification online there is the color code: Brown/Cream. Most of my gilts were not black and white but rather cream with brown patches, so I choose this color code. They resembled the Brown/White kunekune on this site: http://www....

Re: Age at slaughter

Thank you for your reply. There are also some logistic reasons: if I want a new litter in march-april, it would be best in my situation to have sold (or eaten) the previous litter. It is hard to find a estimation of the weight of the pigs on different ages. I found they should reach 10 kilo on 2 mon...

Age at slaughter

Hello, I've got two litters of Kune's (5+8) and our intention always has been to raise at least some for meat. I read in the other threads that the best age for slaughter is 8-10 months. Why is this the best age? For economic reasons or gastronomic reasons? Or both? Economics is not my main reason s...

Re: Sticky pig

The sow does not smell bad (sometimes you read this about greasy pig). She doesn't got real scab with pus in either. I washed her back with some plain water and now the greasy stuff is gone. I'm gonna repeat this today with a little bit of antiseptic soap in the water. One of the piglets (14days old...

Sticky pig

One of mine gilts (2 years old) is about to farrow. She always had a bad skin but it never really affected her general condition, appetite,... Now it seem worse again, and I suspect Greasy Skin disease but it shouldn't appear in adult sow normally. She has dry skin but when it rains e.g. she got lar...

Re: 2 sows foarrowing in same stable

I tried to buld an enclosure with some wooden planks but the piglets of my first sow crawl over it while the sow that still has to farrow will not. Should I confine her for a couple of days after birth so she can't get out of the stable. Is that a good idea? The new piglets will have the sow for the...

Re: 2 sows foarrowing in same stable

Thx Simon for the reply. I haven't got a lot of other options. I'll try to make a creche with wooden planks in the stable so the other piglets can't get with the younger litter that easily. But still It would not be ideal. The situation is this: 1 stable 5m by 4m with one door giving access to the p...

2 sows foarrowing in same stable

Hello,

Would it be a problem to let 2 sows farrow in the same stable.
My first sow has farrowed yesterday (5 piglets are doing fine, 6 were dead :( ). My second sow should farrow within 10 days.

Would both litters get mixed when they are in the same stable?
