Pig drinking but not eating much

Hi there - I have a 10 year old gilt and she's been a picture of health in the 9 years we've had her. However over the past few days she has gone off her food but is drinking a lot of water. She will also take a bit of very soft fruit (grapes), but will not eat her pignuts or carrots. She and her si...

Metacam (Oral) - Alternative oral medication

Hi there - one of my kunekune's has been prescribed Metacam Oral medication by our vet for arthritis in his front leg. This has worked quite well and he also has a turmeric mix too. Both seem to work reasonably well and his limp has reduced hugely over the past few months and he doesn't seem to have...

Misbehaving Pig!

Hi there - we re-homed a couple of gilts early last year as the previous owner lost her land and following a difficult few weeks, they finally settled down with our two castrated boars. However, one of the gilts is now regularly chasing and biting the boys and can be quite nasty with them (usually u...

Feeding

Hi all - would welcome your advice ref amount of pig nuts to feed our kunekune's over winter. They are now fully grown and during the summer, have quite a bit of space in their field, so pretty much graze and therefore need very little else to eat (they do get fruit and veggie treats too). Now that ...

Re: Poorly Eye

Hi Claire - thanks for your advice, her eye wasn't really clearing up very quickly so I called our vet and she gave her an injection and some antibiotic cream for the eye - so fingers crossed she'll be back to her old self soon.

Denise.

Re: Poorly Eye

Thanks Claire - when I checked her last night after bathing her eye in the morning, her eye was open again, but not quite as fully as normal. However, it was closed again with gunk this morning so bathed again and checked again this evening and its open/no gunk tonight - so bathed again and will do ...

Poorly Eye

Hi there - when checking our kunekune's this evening, I noticed that one of the girls has one of her eyes shut and there is "white gunk" right along here eyeline. She was fine last night and this morning so must have developed during the day today. I have just bathed with baby wipes and will also tr...

Re: Another integration issue

Hi Richard - it's taken ours almost 3 weeks to get "friendly" and sleeping together in the same ark - we followed the advice from everyone in the previous post and it worked - but we had to be very patient. Still a bit of chasing now and again but no nipping and generally all getting on a lot better...

Re: Integration Issue!

Thanks Pedro - have to say I had the torch out a few times in the night to check no-one had been chased out but all OK. Have taken down the spare shelter tonight to "encourage" them even further and not too cold overnight so will see how we go! Thanks again for your advice - greatly appreciated Denise

Re: erysipelas vaccine

We also get ours from the vet and as we have quite a big farm vet practice locally, they'll also come out and carry out the injections for you if you're a bit nervous about it yourself - and doesn't cost too much more either.

Re: Integration Issue!

Thanks both! Tried it tonight for the first time and closed the gate so they're all together again in the same paddock as the main ark - boys were then first in to the main ark (which the girls originally turfed them out of!) then a little bit of jostling from the girls but all now snuggled down tog...

Re: Integration Issue!

Thank you Simon & Sam for your advice - it's definitely working! On Friday morning I found one of the girls asleep with Fred & Ginger in the temporary ark and fed all 4 of them together for the first time without too much nipping and chasing! So, on to my next dilemma - whilst all 4 pigs now seem to...

Re: Integration Issue!

Thanks both - really appreciate your advice - we're going to give it a try - although as you say, quite horrid to watch at times.

Will keep you posted!

Cheers

Denise.
