Re: Lame Pig
Hi Keith, If he's bearing weight on it I'd give him 24-48 hours to see if he improves - if he's not bearing weight you need to get a vet out. Without examining him it's going to be difficult - does he not lie down for a belly rub? You might need to ask your vet to come and sedate him while you have ...

Re: Weed killer
Is it the rushes that grow in wet ground? If so, it'll be a battle to keep on top of them with weed killer.........drainage is really the only way to fix that unfortunately :( Could you put some other stock on it when the pigs are in their winter quarters to mow everything right down? Horses/ponies ...
Re: Lame Pig
Hi, the only time I've seen what you describe was when a young gilt had gotten a thorn from a Hawthorn tree stuck up between the soft pads on her foot - it was way up in there and took us about a week to find.... She was bearing weight on it initially but it progressively got worse. Can you get him ...

Re: fencing
If it's a youngster you might get away with hurdles... Link/tie them together and stake them into the ground to add rigidity - tent pegs would probably do if you didn't have anything else. Cardboard/fabric to line might work (haven't tried them myself, having an abundance of pallets  ) Try it ...

Re: fencing
I'd make a small training pen (6ft square or thereabouts, it doesn't need to be big) make the sides solid (pallets are a great way to do it) inside this run a strand of tape or rope around 6 inches high inside it. When they touch the wire they'll have to go backwards away from the solid partition - ...

Re: fencing
Unfortunately pigs will tend to test your fences a bit more than sheep. If they've got lots of space/things to keep them amused they're unlikely to try, but if they manage to find a way out you can bet they'll use it regularly or look for other escape routes :? If the posts are just a little wobbly,...

Re: Breeding Trio for sale - Lanarkshire, Scotland
Sorry have sold them.... But I do have young gilts who are just expecting their first litters so there will be piglets and I would consider selling them in-pig afterwards.
If you want to drop me an email I can send you some photos and give you some more info, it's kkjmckay@aol.com

Kunekunes in need of rehoming - Hampshire
Hi, I took a phone call from a lady this morning who has 3 castrated boars that she has to rehome urgently. They are all 18 months old, registered with the BKKPS and very friendly and well handled. If you can help please drop me a pm, email me on kkjmckay@aol.com or telephone me on 01555 890861 with...

Re: Kunekune pregnant sow in desperate need of home
Hi Megspigs, Firstly, I'm sorry to hear of your troubles! Aggression in Kunekunes is not the norm and I wonder if there may be a reason behind this behaviour? I'm going to ask a few questions to try and get more of a picture... Exactly how pregnant is your sow? If she's close to farrowing (less than...

Re: suckling pig
Hi Julie, I can only give you my experience of doing hog roasts (but the principles should be the same) The carcass should be washed and patted dry (though I did hear reports on the radio the other day that 'they' no longer recommend washing chicken because of the potential spread of bacteria..........

Re: Fox kills Kune piglet
How awful for you  I've always believed that the smell of pigs kept foxes away (or masks the smell of chickens, thus offering some protection) but your sad story completely disproves that theory. Thanks for sharing as it's definitely worth knowing that foxes can and will take piglets, hopefully...

Re: Clarification about new BKKPS ear tags
Your Allflex tags will be pedigree tags (the metal ones are slaughter tags and shouldn't be used for permanent ID) so there's no reason that you can't start from number 1 again. As Simon says, providing the ear tag in the pig matches the number on the pedigree registration certificate there's no iss...

Kunekune showing entries needed in Scotland
Hi folks, It's only a couple of weeks til the entries close for the Scottish Smallholder & Grower Festival in Lanark on Saturday the 28th of September and we could do with some more Kunekunes for people to see and to make the competition more of a competition  It'll be a great day, there's lot...
