Hi,
I have several pigs and just one of them, a castrate, loses his hair every winter. He also only loses the black hair and only down the centre of his back. I don't think it is anything to worry about.

Re: Incidence of hernia's in kunekune boars
My last 2 litters were AWAKINO/TE WHANGI , 3 piglets, and JENNY /ANDREW, 6 piglets. Of these 9 there were 7 boars!! 3 were castrated, including a little runt that was bottle fed, lived in the kitchen in front of the aga and was constantly being picked up - maybe Alison you were just unlucky with you...

Re: Pigs and Bees
That is always a risk, although i have not had a problem and pigs have very thick skin. All the bees (and wasps) in the neighbourhood, not just yours, would be interested in the water. I think they would probably take flight before the pigs laid on them. If you are worried about it then a stone bird...

Re: Pigs and Bees
Hi, I have 5 hives in the corner of a small orchard. I have kept 4 pigs in the rest of the orchard for most of the summer. The hives have stock fencing all round and a strand of electric tape about 6 inches above the ground. If the pigs are running short of grass and the grass looks greener on the o...

Litters page on web site
The litters page on the new web site does not appear to give the Sow and Boar lines for the piglets. Is this right or am I missing something?

Is there an alternative to pig nuts?
About 6 months ago Trading Standards took a sample of my pig nuts for testing. The results showed that the copper content was 45mg instead of 17mg - that is more than 2 1/2 times more than it should be. The reason I am worried is that I graze the pasture with sheep, after I move the pigs off, and th...

I feed mine on the ground in the summer as long as it is not too wet, but in the winter I use recycled rubber skips. It saves the ground when grass is at a premium and there is less squabbling over the food if they have a skip each. I have found that when using a trough there is always one that gets...

Hi Pandora, The idea isn't to sell the piglets as weaners, its to send them to the abatoir youself. I sell sausages and if i sold all of the meat i would make about 70 ponds per pig over and above the cost of the abatoir. If you factor in the cost of feed it is probably no profit at all, but it is b...

Have had the vet out several times with antibiotics and injections for mites but neither really worked and they are at a loss to know wha...
