Does anyone use an auto-drinker?

I currently hand carry water to my 2 KKs, which is fine until we go away. Neighbours are usually happy to help if we are away, but I don't want to depend on them. I'm thinking of getting an auto-drinker, such as this one . This needs mains water supply or a header tank. I wouldn't want anything bigg...

If they are the kurl lock tags i think you'll find they aren't removeable. they make them 'tamper proof' :( I'll try to find out if they are kurl lock tags. The manufacturer's web site at http://www.ketchums.co.uk/tamperproof-clincher-ear-tag-for-pigs.php says "Once this tag is removed it cannot be...

Removing metal ear tags

Both our KK boys had metal ear tags when we got them. They are pets and are not going anywhere. One of them has snagged his ear, which has been bleeding around the tag. He doesn't seem to be in any pain, but I think it would be best to remove the tags. Do I need some special tool to unhook it? I'm n...

What's the penalty for feeding meat tainted products to KKs?

Just wanting to "educate" my neighbours as to what could happen if they were to feed leftover cooked foods or sandwich leftovers to my two KKs. Obviously bad for their health...but what's the potential legal sanction on me and my neighbours? Presumably its on the DEFRA web site somewhere? Could some...

Darrell, did you resolve the problem of bald patches?. I notice that one of my 2 castrated boars has a small bald patch on his back & I'm wondering what treatment I should give. Suggestions anyone? EDIT: OK, I see another thread on page 2 that suggests its not uncommon. I'll change bedding and discu...

Thanks for your comments, I'm going to follow the vet's suggestion.

How frequently do you think I should get the faeces tested? Would every 6 months be OK?

Not worming unless necessary...

Had an interesting discussion with my vet today. We've got 2 lovely castrated males (Mungo and Murdo - thankyou Di!) on about 1 acre of orchard. The land hasn't had animals on it for many years. Where possible I pick up the KK's droppings (good for my compost heap!). The vet suggests that worming ma...

Re: A few planning questions

Don't spend too much in advance; A few more questions: The north side of the plot is reasonably dry (land slopes to south and east). Do you think we could get away without hardstanding or do you think that's asking for trouble over the winter? (or summer, if its like 2007 and 2008!) How much straw/...

Re: A few planning questions

But have you considered a strand of electric wire to and rotate them round instead of having fixed hardstanding & pen? Thought about that and decided against it because of our border terrier puppy and three grandchildren, all of whom we think will want to be friends with the KKs. Thanks for answers.

A few planning questions

We plan to get 2 KKs (castrated boars) as pets this summer. They will be in our paddock/orchard of just under an acre, which we've just refenced with stock fencing (with barbed wire along the bottom). Within that we've got a pen which is 18' X 40'. Have a couple of questions: 1. Is it likely that pi...

kunekunes and beehives

Hi everyone, we are prospective new KK owners planning to get 2 castrated boars as pets this summer (Having been on Wendy's excellent 1 day course last year). We have a paddock of about 0.8 acre, of which half is (new) orchard and the other half meadow. We are thinking about having bees in the orcha...
